Position Title: communications and research officer

About FASTS  
The Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies
(FASTS) is a peak body comprising approximately 60 scientific
organisations or societies, who in turn collectively represent about
60,000 Australian scientists and technologists.
FASTS provides representative, policy analysis, advocacy and science
communication services for its membership. Further information can be

Role and Responsibilities
The communication and research officer will develop capacity in FASTS
and FASTS' member organisations to better communicate with and engage
with political, policy development and administrative processes and
institutions. The position will be based in Canberra. 

Key duties

*	Build close links with members and support their science
communication activities; 
*	Develop a new science communication program for media and/or
Government which is focused on emerging 'on the radar' issues; 
*	Draft/edit media releases, reports, briefs and other materials; 
*	Support FASTS policy development including analysis of
Government and other data (eg OECD and ABS); 
*	assist event management and administration; and 
*	maintain and update the FASTS website 

additional tasks

*	support for FASTS committees; and 
*	some administrative tasks. 

Selection Criteria

Required skills 

*	Training and/or experience in science communication; 
*	Demonstrated interest in science; 
*	Honours level research skills (or similar); 
*	Competence with standard internet, e-mail and office programs
(including excel); 
*	Strong oral and written communication skills; and 
*	Ability to work without high level of supervision 

Desirable skills

*	Competence with updating websites; and 
*	Interest in science, R&D and education policy 

60k plus superannuation
It is intended that the position be full time but we will consider a
fractional appointment for suitably qualified applicants.
