FILM
WASTE = FOOD
Holland. 52mins. Dutch & English with English subtitles
Natural resources are being depleted on a rapid scale while production
and consumption are rapidly rising in nations like China and India. With
their enormous waste production, if nothing is done about it all our
resources will be turned into one big landfill.
TALK
USING LIGHT TO GET THE BREAKDOWN ON PLASTIC
A broad ranging talk stretching from plastic shopping bags to the Joint
Strike Fighter.
Dr Steve Bottle from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Free Radical
Chemistry and Biotechnology, will talk about how controlling the way
that plastics breakdown (and when) is critical for modern applications
of these polymeric materials. Whether it is farming on the granite belt,
looking after turtles in Moreton Bay or even keeping our aircraft flying
out of Amberley, knowledge of the way that plastics degrade can improve
the way that materials persist in the environment and also preserve
structures built or protected by polymer coatings.
