ANSTO visit 20 

ANSTO visit (~2.5 h), Lucas Heights (south-west of 
Sydney, near Menai)

Saturday 20 September 2008, 9.45 am 
until 12.15 pm or/and 12.45 until 3.15pm

Presentation followed by visit of facilities (reactor, 
neutron-guide hall, accelerator, materials division) 
Maximum: 20 people per tour (children age 5 and over can 
come if accompanied by adults)

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology 
Organisation (ANSTO) hosts Australia’s new research reactor, OPAL. OPAL provides 
world class neutron research capabilities for understanding materials at the 
nano-scale and delivers an extensive range of radioisotope products, including 
radiopharmaceuticals for treatment of diseases. ANSTO’s infrastructure includes 
the research reactor OPAL, particle accelerators, radiopharmaceutical production 
facilities, and a range of other unique research facilities. ANSTO delivers 
specialised advice, scientific services and products to government, industry, 
academia and other research organisations.  

Please note:
When visiting ANSTO, you will need to provide your 
contact details, licence (or other identification) number and photo 
identification. Details will need to be collected beforehand, but you will need 
to have identification with you when visiting. 
For security reasons, visitors are not able to take any 
photographic devices, including mobile phones, on site (there are lockers at 
ANSTO is located 40km south-west of Sydney CBD (Google 
Maps shows the location). From the CBD it will take about 45 minutes by car.
