Please find below details of the next Public Lecture at the Centre for
Astrophysics & Supercomputing, given by Professor Bob Carswell, from the
Institute of Astronomy at  the University of Cambridge.

Please note there will be two other free public astronomy lectures this
year.  On  Wednesday 15 October at 6.30pm, Professor Bill Harris of McMaster
University in Canada will speak on 'Creative Reactions to the End of the
World:  From Galileo to the 21st Century Universe'.  Dr Taft Armandroff,
Director of the Keck Observatories in Hawaii, will speak on Thursday, 20
November, at 6.30pm (topic tbc).

Gravity and Light - Gravitational Lenses and Black Holes

We explore how light behaves near massive objects, and show that for
gravitational lenses, gravitational redshifts and black holes, the
main concepts can be understood in general terms from Einstein's
oft-quoted equation, E=mc^2.

Light paths are changed as they pass close to the sun and to massive
galaxies, so giving us the idea of gravitational lenses which can
change the appearance of distant galaxies and quasars. Some examples
of multiply imaged quasars and lensed galaxies are given.

Gravitational redshifts of light from compact stars have been
measured. In the extreme case of very compact objects - black holes -
no light can escape at all. There are compelling reasons for believing
that massive black holes reside near the centers of many galaxies, and
particularly the center of the Milky Way.


Bob Carswell is a Professor of Astronomy at the University of
Cambridge in the U.K. He was born in New Zealand (Invercargill, if
anybody is interested), went to the U.K. to do a PhD degree, and never
quite made it back. His research is mainly on quasars and
observational aspects of the growth of structure in the Universe.  He
is the co-discoverer of the first known gravitationally lensed quasar.
