-----

Ever wondered how to put together an electronic newsletter? Or perhaps you
already know and have been waiting for an opportunity to put your talents to
good use? Here’s your chance.

scope is the monthly online newsletter of the Australian Science
Communicators (ASC), a network of more than 400 people working in science
and technology communication across Australia and overseas. The current
editor of scope, Regan Forrest, is resigning due to the pressures of taking
on new work, so ASC is looking for a new editor to take over starting with
the August 2008 issue. Regan will be able to help ensure the new editor has
a smooth transition into the role.

Compiling and editing scope each month involves:

Ø inviting submissions from ASC branches and office holders around the
middle of each month;

Ø maintaining an events and conference calendar (sourcing details of any
events and websites that might interest ASC members);

Ø listing recent news items or summarising topical stories that affect the
world of science communication;

Ø incorporating anything else that helps ASC members stay abreast of
science communication issues;

Ø lightly editing submissions for consistency of style and formatting
(length of pieces is usually not a big issue given it’s an electronic
format);

Ø marking up the month’s material into basic html using an electronic
template that is part of the ASC website; and

Ø sending out scope to members early in the month (or in the last days of
the preceding month)

Skills required:

·         Computer literacy and web research skills;

·         Ideas about what might improve scope, new ideas for features, etc;

·         A strong sense of self motivation and time management;

· Capacity to dedicate an average of 8-10 hours a month to preparing
scope (4-6 hours would be the minimum to keep things ticking over); and

· A basic understanding of html would be useful (an hour’s googling
on the subject would probably bring a novice sufficiently up to speed)

Honorarium is $100 per issue.

There is a lot of latitude for the new editor to mould SCOPE in his or her
own image. Regan has built up an arsenal of useful websites for researching
news, new sci-com reports and publications, which she would be happy to pass
on.

One of the benefits of this role is getting to know the tireless folk
involved in Australia’s science communication scene. Another benefit is
gaining some insight into how editors and publishers generally operate.

If you have any technical questions about what the role entails, send an
email to Regan at regan at reganforrest.com
