Garlic, Vampires and Free Radicals
Presented by Professor Carl Schiesser
Centre Director, ARC Centre of Excellence for Free Radical Chemistry and Biotechnology, University of Melbourne

Free radicals are located all around us, and can cause cell damage associated with cardiovascular disease, inflammation and cancer. Many commercially valuable products deteriorate through processes that involve free radicals in the atmosphere such as the deterioration of plastics, the fading of paint in houses, the degradation of works of art and food spoilage.

At the ARC Centre of Excellence for Free Radical Chemistry and Biotechnology researchers are working towards understanding the fundamental factors that control free radical reactions and the prevention of radical damage through the design and preparation of novel products. By harnessing free radical reactivity, biological and environmental processes can be controlled.

This seminar will discuss free radicals, their affect on health and the environment, and materials being produced by Centre researchers to prevent free radical damage.
