The Australian Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre for Emerging Infectious Disease (AB-CRC) is looking to recruit a part-time Communication Manager to its Brisbane headquarters based at the St Lucia campus of the University of Queensland.


The Centre is a national joint venture, which has been established to undertake collaborative research, education and training initiatives. These initiatives focus on building national capacity for responding to emerging infectious disease threats impacting on animal and/or public health, such as foot-and-mouth disease and avian influenza. Joint venture partners include research organisations, livestock industry groups, diagnostic companies, and commonwealth and state government agencies with policy and regulatory responsibility for health and biosecurity. The Centre's major research nodes are in Brisbane, Geelong and Perth.


We are looking to recruit someone to join our multidisciplinary and dynamic team whose members are located at sites around the country. This position requires extensive liaison across our partner organisations. We are looking for a team player who has strong communication and organisational skills, and who can manage multiple responsibilities. Communication Manager


This is a part time (0.5 FTE), fixed term appointment, December 2008 until mid-August 2009. The remuneration package will be in the range of HEW 8 ($68,734.43 to $77,179.49 (FTE)) per annum. Part-time employees shall be entitled to pro rata sick leave, recreation leave, long service leave and parental leave based upon the number of hours worked per week. 


The AB-CRC's Communication Manager is responsible for managing the AB-CRC's Communication Strategy, which supports the Centre's operations by liaising with participants, industry, government, media and community bodies on the Centre's behalf, and is fully integrated with the Centre's Research, Education & Training, and Application & Linkage Programs.


The Communication Manager will be required to work autonomously, undertaking specific communication projects approved by the CEO. The Communication Manager will also work closely with the CEO, Director - Application & Linkage, Education & Training Program Manager, Research Program Managers, and individual researchers to develop and implement tailored communication strategies and activities for disseminating information about and/or generated by the Centre.


The Communication Manager is responsible to the CEO of the AB-CRC and specific duties will be determined by the CEO.  

*         Relationship management of Centre participants, including CSIRO, commonwealth and state departments of agriculture and health, universities, livestock industry groups and private diagnostic companies via newsletters, email bulletins and other communications as necessary.

*         Promote the work of the Centre and manage external public relations through print and electronic media including the Centre's web sites, marketing materials, displays, participation in industry conferences and other special events to promote and facilitate the Centre's work with industry.

*         Advise the CEO, Senior Management and scientists on communication/public relations issues, including risk communication strategies for release of sensitive and/or contentious research findings.

*         Write media releases and liaise with the media as the Centre's corporate representative.

*         Generate summary articles, briefs, industry communiqués, and other printed materials from complex scientific publications for stakeholders, industry, politicians and bureaucrats. 

*         Supervise Communication & IT Assistant, graphic designer, newsletter editor, and annual report and partner reports writer/editor.

*         Coordinate and facilitate the production of Centre reports to government, industry and external stakeholders. 

*         Assist the staff of the Centre in the development of communication skills.

*         Support activities hosted by the AB-CRC, i.e. conferences, symposiums, etc.

*         Develop and revise the communication strategy as necessary.


Selection Criteria



1.       Education and/or training equivalent to a degree in science and/or communication from a recognised tertiary institution. (Applicants with a qualification in another discipline and/or extensive relevant experience will be considered.)

2.       Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively by telephone, in writing and in person with a full range of scientific and non-scientific professionals in R&D organisations, government, the media and the public.

3.       Expert in translating technical information for use by non-scientific audiences.

4.       Demonstrated organisational skills including the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, initiate and follow-up actions with minimal supervision working cooperatively in a small team with multiple responsibilities and with a commitment to quality outcomes.

5.       Demonstrated proficiency in using information technology, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint), Filemaker Pro, Endnote, email and internet software.



6.       Interest in scientific research and understanding of medical terminology

7.       Demonstrated experience of national and international biosecurity issues as they relate to exotic and emerging infectious diseases.
