Program of PUBLIC (and FREE) SCIENCE EVENTS in Brisbane held in conjunction
with INTECOL -the International Congress of Ecology. The Congress attracts
over 1200 ecologists from around the world, who are meeting to discuss a
range of issues related to climate change, biodiversity and environmental
resource use and management.
MONDAY 17 August - The Science of Sustaining our Urban Landscapes
A public lecture & panel debate focused on Urban Ecology, sustainable urban
planning and development and the responsibility of ecologists in securing
our future.
Speakers include:
. Dr Mark McDonnell - Director, Australian Research Centre for Urban
Ecology,
. Dr Darryl Jones - Director, Centre for Innovation Conservation
Strategies, Griffith University,
. Mr Cliff Dorse, City of Cape Town, Cape Town, Western Cape
Province, South Africa, and
. Prof. Hugh Possingham - Director, The Ecology Centre, The
University of Queensland as MC.
Ithaca Room at Brisbane City Hall
6:00pm for a 6:30pm start. Complimentary drinks and nibbles will follow the
talk, and speakers will be available to answer any questions.
In collaboration with BrisScience, and supported by Brisbane City Council.
TUESDAY 18 August - The role of science in integrated river basin management
Special lecture presented by the Australian Rivers Institute, featuring Rob
Freeman and Cliff Dahm.
Dedicated to the memory of the visionary environmental scientist, Professor
Peter Cullen.

THURSDAY 20 August - Nature - sell it to save it?
BYO brain, sense of humour and healthy appetite for controversy to the
Plough Inn for the INTECOL BYO Science night. Will the Carbon Emissions
Trading Scheme work? Should we sell biodiversity? And if so, how much should
it cost? And would we float it on the stock market? These and many other
curly questions on the commercial value of nature and our future within it
will be bandied around and debated with some big names in ecology.
In collaboration with ASC, Econnect, and supported by the Department of
Employment, Economic Development and Innovation.
Speakers include:
. Prof. Hugh Possingham from the University of Queensland,
. Dr Stefan Hajkowicz from CSIRO's Sustainable Ecosystems, and
. Dr Nicola Markus from Bush Heritage Australia.
The Plough Inn at Stanley Street Plaza at South Bank
7:00pm till 9:00pm
The Plough Inn has great meals, and event will be a cabaret style panel with
complimentary nibbles.
Drinks at bar prices.

FRIDAY 21 August - Science, Fame and (Mis)Fortune - Film wind-down
Presented in collaboration with Australia's <http://www.csiro.au/scinema/>
SCINEMA Festival of Science Film, Meet some of the world's most famous
scientists with Australian filmmaker and science communicator Bobby Cerini.
Enter the lives and living rooms of influential minds like David
Attenborough, Sir Patrick Moore, David Suzuki, Sir Gustav Nossal, Tim
Flannery and others.
As well as being privy to some telling interviews with these names, come and
be part of the audience for a live interview with the Queensland Museum's
very own Scott Hocknull, dinosaur chaser, geosciences curator and 2002 Young
Australian of the Year. As part of the National Scinema film festival, this
event is a must for science enthusiasts, science communicators and
inquisitive minds!

6:00pm to around 8:30pm (Doors open just before 6pm)
Refreshments: Complimentary drinks and nibbles will follow the talk.

Presented in collaboration with the <http://www.intecol10.org/> Queensland
Museum South Bank, INTECOL conference delegates communicate their work to
the public in an engaging public poster display.
