UWA SCIENCE COMMUNICATION SEMINAR SERIES- 28 August 2009

This week we have two student presenters: Jacqueline McNally and Rita
Costa. They will be presenting their practicum talks for the unit
COMM3317 Science
Communication Practicum. Students in this unit plan, participate and report
on a supervised project while on a practicum placement.

Jacqueline McNally's talk will be entitled "Behind the Scenes - Producing
'Eyes to Telescopes'"

The Eyes to Telescopes video tells the story of the development of more
powerful telescopes used by astronomers. Jane Gregory said "Stories need
characters" and the history of the development of the telescope is full of
interesting people, their culture, politics, religion, and music, as well as
science.

Jacqueline McNally developed the concept design and storyboard for 'Eyes to
Telescopes', the first chapter of the First Light video series, based on
Professor Peter Quinn's 'First Light' presentation.

In this talk, Jacqueline will present some glimpses behind the scenes as
producer and director of Eyes to Telescopes for the Centre for Learning
Technology, UWA.

Rita Costa is a Portuguese marine biologist who has just started her PhD at
UWA. She is taking Science Communication units because in the near future
she will be studying communication issues regarding marine protected areas.
Her talk is entitled *"**Inside a Greenie communication** **campaign*: a
