UWA SCIENCE COMMUNICATION SEMINAR SERIES- 18th September 2009

Next week we have two students, Mark Cornish and Rita Costa, who will be
delivering talks for the units COMM3318/ COMM3317 Science Communication
Practicum.

We all heard about the tragically destructive bushfires in Victoria,
February 2009. 2000 homes were burned and at least 173 people dead. Certain
organisations effectively closed down - they couldn't cope with the influx
of phone calls from people wanting information. Did the Australian Science
Media Centre have an important role during this period?

Mark Cornish, a science communication honours student at the University of
Western Australia, will not yet be able to answer this question, but he will
talk about plans for his practicum at the Australian Science Media
Centre in Adelaide.

Rita Costa is a Portuguese marine biologist who has just started her PhD at
UWA. She is taking Science Communication units because in the near future
she will be studying communication issues regarding marine protected areas.
Her talk is entitled *"**Inside a Greenie communication** **campaign*: a
practicum with Save Our Marine Life".
