The national director of the Science and 
Engineering Challenge, Bob Nelson, will be 
retiring in October this year after 10 years of 
exceptional service to the Challenge.

General Information
The position is available on a full-time, continuing basis.
Challenges are conducted in every state and 
territory within Australia therefore with this 
role you are required to undertake extensive 
periods away incorporating significant road travel.

Position Description
Position: Director - National Science and Engineering Challenge
Classification: HEW level 10+

Overall Objective: To lead and direct all 
operational aspects of the Science and 
Engineering Challenge in accordance with 
University policy and directives and the policy 
and protocols approved by the National Science 
and Engineering Challenge Council (NSECC). Also 
conduct authorised Challenges in accordance with 
standard operating principles.


Qualification and/or Skills Required
„« Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or 
substantial experience in relevant areas such as 
logistics, organisation and leadership.
„« Demonstrated capacity to promote outreach activities.

„« Proven financial/resource and people 
management skills including demonstrated ability 
to build effective teams and to develop staff, 
including experience in the supervision of staff.
„« Proven experience and expertise in 
strategically positioning and promoting 
education/engagement programs into the community.

„« Outstanding facilitation, interpersonal, 
written and oral communication skills, including 
sensitivity, respecting cultural diversity and 
effectively communicating with a broad range of people.

„« Capacity for lateral thinking and highly 
developed conceptual and analytical skills.

„« Capacity to design and oversee the development of new activities.
„« Ability to strengthen and integrate Equity and 
Diversity, Occupational Health and Safety and 
Performance Management principles in the 
management of staff and capacity to implement relevant plans and policies.

Conditions and Benefits
An attractive remuneration of at least $91,000 pa 
will be offered to the successful applicant.
Compulsory contributory superannuation is a 
condition of employment plus generous employer contribution of up to 17%.
