FASTS an independent voice for science? Yes, why not? I'm sure
that's what they'd claim.
But if the advocacy body is drawing half its funds from Government, it
can have the effect of, well, softening criticism it may otherwise
have made. This does not necessarily mean the advocacy body becomes
ineffective.
You mentioned the Crawford Fund as being involved in 'some really good
lobbying' at Parliament House yesterday. At least ten Government
Departments are listed on its website as 30 sponsoring bodies:
