The Brain That Repairs Itself

Dr Clare Parish and Dr Lachlan Thompson are from the Florey Neuroscience
Institutes and will give a special talk to ASC members about the latest
treatments for neurological conditions including stroke, motor neuron
disease, Huntington's disease and Parkinson's disease. Their work is
extraordinarily important, given that diseases of the brain affect one in
five Australians and have a significant impact on the lives of their
families and friends as well as the health system.

Stem cell therapy offers a contemporary way forward for people seeking
treatment for these neurological conditions. Stem-cell therapies can
generate dopamine neurons that actually repair the brain from the
inside. Clare
and Lachlan are also trying to stop brain degeneration by placing genetic
material directly into a cell, delivering signals to tell the cell to stay
alive. This protects neurons from injury and promotes self-repair.

Clare and Lachlan will provide an insider's view on current thinking about
the resilience of the brain and how their cutting-edge research could
improve the quality of life for thousands of people. This special event is
hosted by the Australian Science Communicators in partnership with the
Florey Institute.
