It really depends on what kind of work you want to do.

The MEAA has recently pledged to look after freelance journalists and are in the process of adjusting freelance rates and preparing a contract to protect copyright and moral rights.  I've just requested an update on the status of this and can post here if anyone's interested?

The freelance rates they advocate are reasonable when you consider the cost of running a business, as already mentioned here.  They are also close to what you can achieve for corporate work.  If, however, you want to write for magazines then they are far from realistic.

The best advice is, do a business plan, work out your costs and then stick to your fees.  When I do corporate work,which I haven't done for a while, I would calculate an hourly rate then do a proposal together with a list of everything I would undertake and anything I wouldn't, cost it based on my hourly rate, then give them a project based fee with some contingency for administration overheads etc.  

For magazines I have still not been able to command the rate I need to have a viable business. I think a fair rate for freelance articles is $1 per word.   I have had to drop some reasonably paid markets, on principle, because they have a standard per word rate they won't budge on.  Plus my hubby says you can sit on the beach and not lose money.  

Why can't I get $1 per word.  I don't have a high enough profile, ie I'm not an author of a book, haven't won any awards etc etc.  Freelancers need to work on this and I'm entering the Walkleys this year.  

Publishers can't afford to pay freelancers this kind of money?  I don't know about this.  A one page ad in a high profile mag is worth a few thousand dollars.  I can't say the Murdoch and Packers appear to be doing it hard.    Maybe Wilson Da Silva can comment here?  

Undercutting is a big issue and is my major concern and I don't know what the solution is.  I have asked MEAA how they expect to maintain our rates.  As stated before I have dropped a number of magazines because I could not negotiate a reasonable rate.  Most recently I dropped G Magazine because I couldn't negotiate past $0.50 per word.  The only concession they would make was to give me my copyright.  Some concession!

Freelancing is a tough competitive business.  Hence the need for a business and marketing plan.
