Nominations open for the 2011 Western Australian Science Awards

The Western Australian Science Awards were established in 2002 to honour and
reward the outstanding achievements of the State¹s science and innovation
community. Now in their 10th year, the Awards continue to recognise
excellence in all fields of science, including the natural, medical, applied
and technological sciences, engineering and mathematics.
 
The 2011 Awards celebrate the State¹s best scientists, science communicators
and science teachers in seven categories.

1. Scientist of the Year ­ Cash prize of $50,000
2. Early Career Scientist of the Year ­ Cash prize of $10,000
3. Science Communication Initiative of the Year ­ Cash prize  of $10,000
4. Science Educator of the Year: Secondary ­ Cash prize of $10,000
5. Science Educator of the Year: Primary ­ Cash prize of $10,000
6. Mathematics  Educator of the Year: Primary ­ Cash prize of $10,000*
7. Mathematics Educator of the Year: Secondary ­ Cash prize of  $10,000
 
Science Communication Initiative of the Year (Cash prize of $10,000)
recognises an individual, group or organisation that has delivered an
outstanding, innovative and ongoing science communication initiative within
the past year. The initiative must promote and encourage community
understanding of science within Western Australia.
 
Past winners of Science Communication Initiative of the Year Award are:
* Marine Discovery West
* ECOCEAN 
* SymbioticA 
* Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre
* Fremantle Light and Sound Discovery centre
 
The WA Science Awards provide an opportunity to acknowledge outstanding
staff or colleagues through nominating them for an Award. Nominations are
now open and will close at 5pm, Friday 29 July 2011.
