Sustainability education at a Perth primary school: What difference does it make anyway?
PhD Candidate: Zarin Salter

Supervisors: Grady Venville and Nancy Longnecker

Zarin will examine the effectiveness and explore the dynamics of whole-school, whole-system education for sustainability on adoption of environmentally responsible attitudes and behaviours in upper-primary school children. Her study features a Perth primary school supported by the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative- Western Australia (AuSSI-WA) and accompanied by Millennium Kids Inc. Results will be presented from surveys and mind-maps conducted with students from years 4, 5 and 6 in 2009 (n=165) and interviews with eleven children, their parents, the school principal and several teachers. Calls for environmental sustainability to be taught in schools, for more community-school partnerships and for parents to be active participants in behaviour change all emphasise the need for studies to evaluate and help identify paths for future action.
