The Many Murders of Harold Shipman: A Case Study In Forensic Science - Tuesday, 27 September 2011

A public lecture by Dr Simon W. Lewis, CChem FRSC, Associate Professor Forensic and Analytical Chemistry, Curtin University
In recent years forensic science has become a focus of popular television programmes such as CSI, which has lead to a generally unrealistic view of forensic science. This presentation will explore the background to the forensic science, in particular the chemistry that was fundamental to the successful prosecution of Harold Shipman. In January 2000 this former UK doctor was convicted of the murder of 15 of his elderly patients by administering lethal injections of opiates. The subsequent enquiry established that he had killed at least 215 people over a period of 23 years, making him the United Kingdom's most prolific mass murderer.
