“Imaging atoms - Probing the atomic structure of matter with an energetic electron”
This talk will describe recent advances in the use of high energy electrons to probe the atomic and electronic structure of matter. When high energy electrons strike a thin specimen, they scatter multiply from the atoms within and emerge rich with information about the arrangement and type of atoms inside the specimen and how they are bonded together.
Recent developments in electron-optics have enabled the generation of electron beams which can be focussed to an area much smaller than an atom in diameter, enabling a “handful” of atoms to be probed selectively from within a material. These new capabilities are enabling the determination of atomic structures and bonding with unprecedented resolution. In particular, they offer unique capabilities for determining the local structure and bonding of “nanostructured materials”, whose special properties can depend on a small number of atoms located in critical positions, such as at an atomic interface or on the surface of a nanoparticle. A range of practical examples will be given from the ultrahigh resolution electron microscope capability at Monash University.
***The main talk will be preceded by a short talk by Scott Daniel, a PhD student from Swinburne University, who will speak about his experiences doing volunteer work in physics education in Vanuatu and Namibia***
