PCST and the Science Communicator's Assn of New Zealand will co-host a
symposium on disasters and science communication in Christchurch, New
Zealand on 21-22 February 2013. The second day will mark the 2 year
anniversary of the devastating earthquake that hit Christchurch in 2011.

expression of interest by 1 September 2012 as a potential speaker,
presenter or participant.
The Symposium 2013 is entitled: 'Disasters - communicating in the
crisis and aftermath'. It will build on the growing body of research
that has taken place in the wake of the Canterbury earthquakes and
look at disaster planning, communication and resilience issues both in
New Zealand and around the world. This joint SCANZ & PCST event will
appeal to academics, journalists, science communicators, policy
makers, city planners and local and regional authorities interested in
the communication of science-related issues in before, during and
after times of crisis. On 23 February, a variety of tour options to
science facilities and other sites around the city will be offered.
Symposium topics will include:
*Risk communication in relation to the threat of disasters
*Case studies of effective science communication during disasters
*The perception that we are faced with more natural disasters, extreme
weather, earthquake swarms, pandemics, agricultural crisis - what does
the science say?
*The responsibility of scientists - where the law meets scientific
*Supporting scientists on the frontline when their expertise is needed
*Communicating science as a disaster is still unfolding
*The changes in public understanding and expectations of science and
*Science for a sustainable future - communicating to avert disaster
