Hosted by the global science communication network PCST and the Science
Communicators Association of New Zealand, a 2013 communication symposium
focused on communicating science during and after a crisis will be held in
Christchurch, NZ in February 2013.

Local and Central Government staffers, journalists, science communicators,
business people, academics, the insurance sector, students, policy makers,
city planners, scientists, those in the community sector and many others
from NZ and around the world will attend this conference.

The second day of the symposium will occur on the two year anniversary of
the devastating earthquake that hit the Canterbury region in 2011.

The conference is entitled: "Disasters - Communicating in the Crisis and
Aftermath", and will explore the challenges of communicating science during
major events, from earthquakes, tsunamis and pandemics to agricultural
disease outbreaks and ship wrecks, as well as focus on sustainability,
climate change and disaster prevention planning. It will offer a wide
variety of insights and opportunities to network with others interested in
the communication of complexity and risk to the public and other audiences.

On 23 February, a variety of tour options to science facilities and other
sites around the city will be available.

The speaking line-up includes Massimiano Bucchi (Università di Trento),
Satoko Oki (Tokyo University), Ren Fujun (China Research Institute for
Science Popularization - CRISP), Giuseppe Pellegrini (Observa Science in
Society), Li Xiuju (CRISP), Jenni Metcalfe (Econnect Communications,
