Welcome to my bulletin with physics news and events for October 2012 and beyond.

This month we have mastering the quantum world in Tasmania, supermassive black holes in Melbourne, the UK Government's Chief Scientific Advisor in Canberra, and open days at Siding Springs Observatory in Coonabarabran and at the Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne.

And the Victorian AIP Branch will present a talk on the winner of the 2012 Nobel Laureate in Physics, which will be announced on in Sweden on 9 October.

The program for the AIP/ACOFT 2012 Congress will be posted soon. If you are planning to come, take advantage of the early bird registration, available until 12 October. And all are invited to Brian Schmidt's free public talk on Wednesday 12 December. Congress news below includes the Student Experiment Competition and an invitation to the University of Sydney's Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Launch.

Rob Robinson, AIP Vice President, gives us an insight into the recent Science Meets Parliament, where he met many parliamentarians, attended Question Time and gave a speech at the banquet.

I also look at physics in the new, free, higher education Massive Open Online Courses, the physics Ig Nobel, and the chance for students to carry out observations at the Parkes radio telescope.

In my role as AIP President, I was invited to cut the ribbon and officially open the new Southern Skies: Astronomy in Tasmania<http://www.qvmag.tas.gov.au/qvmag/?c=130> exhibit at the Inveresk site of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston on Friday 7 October. About 50 guests attended.

Professor David Jamieson, Chair of the Decadal Plan Working Group, has submitted the draft of the Physics Decadal Plan to the Australian Academy of Science. The Working Group is currently incorporating comments from the Academy's Council and the heads of the Academy's science education programs (Primary Connections and Science by Doing), as well as the Chair of the National Committee for Physics. The launch is expected to take place before the end of 2012.

We'll also have a plenary discussion of the Physics Decadal Plan, led by David Jamieson, on Tuesday 11 December at the AIP/ACOFT Congress.
