Earth Science Week puts careers in focus

Looking for a career in science - why not try the geosciences. The word 'geo' comes from Ancient Greek and means Earth and like the characteristics of the Earth itself, the applications are endless.

The most familiar derivations are geography and geology, although that term is only a few centuries old with it reputedly becoming an accepted term in the late 1700s. But those two are just the tip of the iceberg. Others include geography, geodesy, geochemistry, geochronology, geodynamics, seismology, mineralogy, volcanology, sedimentology, glaciology, paleontology and a whole host of others.

Geoscience Australia will again be hosting Australia's Earth Science Week celebrations<http://www.ga.gov.au/education/public-events/earth-science-week/earth-science-week-2012.html> from 14 - 20 October 2012, aligning with the international Earth Science Week<http://www.earthsciweek.org/> theme of 'Discovering careers in Earth sciences'.

If you want to learn about the Earth sciences and the opportunities they present come along to the Geoscience Australia Careers Expo<http://www.ga.gov.au/education/public-events/earth-science-week/careers-expo.html> on 18 October between 1:00 and 5:00 pm. Come and speak to our scientists<http://www.ga.gov.au/jobs/meet-our-staff.html> about the work they do and find out more about Geoscience Australia's Graduate Program<http://www.ga.gov.au/jobs/graduate-program.html> and work experience opportunities<http://www.ga.gov.au/jobs/work-experience.html>.

Winners of the GeoLogi<http://www.ga.gov.au/education/public-events/geologi-short-film-competition.html> student short film and Top GeoShot<http://www.ga.gov.au/education/public-events/top-geoshot-2012.html> photographic competitions will also be announced at a special ceremony on Wednesday 17 October.

Schools, libraries and community organisations from across Australia are also invited to take part in the upcoming Earth Science Week celebrations by organising a local event or display to highlight the vast variety of career opportunities available in the Earth sciences.

For more information on how you can take part in Earth Science Week<http://www.ga.gov.au/education/public-events/earth-science-week.html>, please contact the Geoscience Australia Education Team on 02 6249 9673 or education at ga.gov.au<mailto:education at ga.gov.au>.
