AIBN Special Seminar: Dr Ben Muir, CSIRO Materials Science and
Clickable Nanometer Thin plasma Polymer Films for Biomedical
Applications and Self Assembled Lyotropic Liquid Crystal Nanoparticles
for Gene Therapy and Medical Imaging; A Tale of Two Nano Research Areas
Thursday, 6 September 2012
AIBN Seminar Room, Level 1, Building 75, St Lucia Campus
Dr Ben Muir is a research scientist at CSIRO Materials Science and
Engineering. He will present some work on the development of bromine
plasma polymers that can be functionalised with azide groups following
nucleophillic substitution. These films can then be functionalised with
small molecules and polymers using click chemistry. Ben will present
recent work published in Biomacromolecules where alkyne functionalised
PEG polymers were patterned onto the bromine plasma polymer surface for
controlled cell adhesion. In addition to this Ben will talk about recent
work based on an article published in Molecular Pharmaceutics where he
used lyotropic liquid crystal nanoparticles as gene delivery agents for
application in RNA interference therapies. He will present data showing
cell toxicity differences with various nanoparticle formulations and
knockdown of green fluorescent protein (GFP) expression in various cell
lines will be presented. Finally he will present a few slides on his
work published in Biomaterials where nitroxide lipids were incorporated
into lyotropic liquid crystal nanoparticles as potential T1 MRI contrast
agents. In vitro and in vivo data will be presented.
