Today's Australian has an op-ed by Monash Uni's Professor Michael Asten.

"Warming is well within historic range", says Asten - but readers should treat it with caution.

Professor Asten qualifications for commenting on climate change were checked out by The Conversation, as part of a broader piece on The Australian's practice of publishing op-ed pieces on climate change from people with no record in peer-reviewed literature.

"…while [Asten] appears to be your go-to guy if you have electromagnetic interference problems with your fluxgate magnetometer, he hasn’t published anything remotely related to climate science. He is, however, well-connected with the mining and coal industries."

It's a strong critique of The Australian's coverage of climate change, and still makes good reading although originally published in August 2011.

Happy Australia Day holiday!
