“Understanding the Biology of Colon Cancer ”
Unless more effective treatments are developed, a significant number of people will continue to die from colon cancer. Professor Burgess’ research aims at understanding colon cancer in such a way that we can develop specific treatments to reduce the impact of this disease. His research team is studying the proteins which control the production of cells in the normal and cancerous colonic mucosa. It is clear that one particular protein is damaged in most colon cancers and the team is investigating strategies to reverse the cancerous effects of the loss of this protein.
In an effort to identify drugs capable of targeting colon cancer his research program combines cancer genetics, cell biology, protein structure determination and computer biology.
