[ASC-list] Sharing ASC events

I love this exchange, it is making me smile as I go about other things.
Susan thanks so much for kicking it off.
Following is a bit of background related to moving our association from
"vacuum" to thriving hub of intellectual science communication capital,
along with an informal announcement about our proposed online member
community :-)
Long winded, but captures a lot of what has been going on behind the
scenes. In future we will have ways of inviting others in to the ongoing
development of the association in more practical ways!
Part of the reason I responded to Ian's original event email was that I am
*really* missing my previously jam packed interesting seminar and event
schedule.
When I was embedded in the Sydney scene and working with groups across 10+
universities around Australia it was very easy to get out and about to
catch all sorts of awesomeness, and it was also easier to be alerted to
what great things were coming up.
I moved to the very green northern NSW recently after some 20+ years of
city life and the plethora of events is sorely missed. I also miss eateries
that are open when I'm hungry which is most of the time. I do however love
the quiet, the near empty beaches, the local farmers markets, and the
scenic roads for riding my motorbike. :-)
With all the recording devices we walk around with nowadays it is insane to
me that we aren't utilising them as a collective to share experiences.
Science communicators have some of the most interesting lives of any group
I know, and if we all captured quick audio/video recordings of the
interesting events we are invited in to, imagine how rich our media library
would be as a collective!
So.... for many mixed reasons I have had a long term wicked plan of getting
the ASC up and running with its own online member community. A place where
members can easily see and find each other, network, share media of
interest, develop resource libraries of great things created by members
over the years, and much more.
We need a home to capture all the great stuff that happens with and for our
members in a way that is a bit more permanent than the ever moving stream
of good things passing us by.
This way, incoming members, branch committee members and executive would
have access to all that has gone before and special interest groups could
easily form and run projects together and develop, share or coordinate
resources.
Up until recent times we (the ASC) have not been in a position to provide
this. I am currently the only paid ASC person and that 9 hours per week is
eaten very rapidly just taking care of our membership matters, list
maintenance, bookkeeping, supporting Exec and so on. In reality I work very
many more hours for free though I am hoping that if we get an online
community happening this will no longer be the case.
Having an association home base that will accommodate all the interesting
ideas our members have will help make many more of those ideas become
reality because there will be a work space to accommodate them. This is
exciting!
To this end we have purchased an association management software called
YourMembership. You can find out more about it here:
http://www.yourmembership.com/
Carving out the time to put such a system is place is now a top priority
and this week I was to begin to investigate how we might roll that out. It
will be a slow implementation over time because we need to have our members
involved in guiding the direction we will take. It is exciting that Claire
Harris is on board this year as a VP to help bring some order and clear
thinking to our communication development for the association.
After we have put our heads together on the initial feature set and
developed a bit of an implementation plan that is doable given current
resource constraints, I am sure there will be *many* opportunities for keen
member volunteers to help us shape a space that is tailor made for our
community.
I imagine that members who have been vocal on the list about special
interest areas could come on board as ambassadors for that interest and
help us to create a space to see them through. In recent times there has
been mention of style guides, media sharing and more. Initially, even just
building informed collections of resources about each of these areas would
be valuable for members.
So now I have informally announced that we are going to develop an online
membership community for the association. More formal communication and an
invitation to assist will follow in due course :-)
All those with an interest in being involved are most welcome to send me a
note expressing their area of interest. That is, what would you like to do
for the association to make it a better place to be?
Cheers,
Kali
