Advances in nanotechnology have the potential to greatly improve the way we treat diseases such as cancer, HIV and diabetes. Nanoengineered drug carriers can deliver therapeutics specifically to the areas of the body where the drug is active, limiting harmful side effects and improving the effectiveness of the drug. While this field holds great promise, progress towards clinical use of these therapies have been limited by our poor understanding of how nanomaterials interact with the body. Dr Johnston’s research focuses on understanding how nanomaterials interact with biological systems and this talk will explore current progress in nanomedical research and highlight the important questions that are yet to be answered.

Dr Angus Johnston is an ARC Future Fellow and head of the Nanomaterials for Biology group at the University of Melbourne. His current research focuses on developing drug delivery systems and engineering molecular sensors for tracking proteins and nanoparticles in cells. Angus has received a number of awards for his research, including the 2010 Young Tall Poppy Science Award from the Australian Institute of Policy and Science.

Forthcoming talks:

June 19th A/Prof Mike Lawrence, Structural Biology, WEHI

July 17th Prof Franz Grieser, Sonochemistry, Particulate Fluids Processing Centre

We are pleased to acknowledge the support by CSL and GTAC for the ANZAAS Melbourne science talks series
