On Thursday 3 October Professor Dr Makoto Asashima, Executive Director of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), will deliver a public lecture on Research and Policy Trends in Life Sciences in Japan at Questacon.

This lecture will examine some of the recent trends and developments in life science research, and provide a Japanese perspective on issues affecting the broader scientific community. The opportunity for an engaging discussion will follow Professor Asashima's lecture.

The lecture will be held between 16:15 - 17:00pm in the Japan Theatre at Questacon, King Edward Terrace, Canberra.

If you would like to secure a seat at this lecture please RSVP to Japan at innovation.gov.au<mailto:Japan at innovation.gov.au> or phone Jodie Stuart on 02 6102 8002 at DIICCSRTE, International Education and Science Division, North East Asia and Pacific.

Background

Professor Asashima is one of Japan's most eminent medical science researchers and holds a number of prominent roles in Japan's science community. These include:

*         Executive Director of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS);

*         Director of the Research Center for Stem Cell Engineering at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST);

* Principal Fellow of the Center for Research and Development Strategy with the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST); and

* Emeritus Professor of the Department of Life Science (Biology) at the University of Tokyo.

As an influential figure in both science and science policy circles in Japan, Professor Asashima is ideally placed to discuss the interaction between government and cutting-edge research in one of the world's major knowledge producing nations.
Professor Asashima is an advocate for a national and strategic approach to science, and cautions scientists against self-regulating their research to meet other people's expectations. He strongly supports the notion of the scientific community fostering the next generation of young talent.
