Unsung Hero of Australian Science Communication

Thursday 6 February 2014

On Tuesday 4 February 2014, the Australian Science Communicators (ASC)
recognised Craig Cormick as the 2013 Unsung Hero of Australian Science

Craig is currently the National Operations Manager for CSIRO Education
and was recognised for two decades of engagement and impact across the
broad spectrum of science communication.

The ASC created the Unsung Hero award to honour a person or group who
exemplifies science communication and who has not yet received
significant recognition for their contributions.

As a leading science communicator, Craig has headed up several federal
government science communication enterprises, including Biotechnology
Australia and the National Enabling Technologies Strategy.

Within the scientific and communication community, Craig's biggest
impact has been in demanding more evidence-based rigour in science
communication practice, and in ensuring communication strategies start
with considering the intended audience, for a 'ground-up' approach.

Craig has also been instrumental in community engagement and improving
communication practices around contentious technologies (e.g.
nanotechnology) and challenging areas of science, such as climate

The Unsung Hero award was presented at the ASC Conference dinner in
Brisbane. Ever the innovative communicator, Craig's acceptance speech
took the form of a 'science rap' and name-checked his experiences,
influences and science communication heroes.

The judging panel also recognised two highly commended finalists - Dr
Shane Huntington <http://wp.me/p1Zzkn-kPT> , from the University of
Melbourne and broadcaster on 3RRR's Einstein-a-Go-Go program and Frankie
Lee <http://wp.me/p1Zzkn-kPT> , a freelancer instrumental in delivering
many of Australia's leading science communication events.

Craig's full citation and acceptance rap can be found here
