Do you also have a list of the organising committee. It would be good to acknowledge them.

Ps I also spoke loudly from the back of the room.

Subject: [ASC-list] Missing program from Melbourne PCST conference?

A couple of months ago I asked the List if anyone had a copy of the program from the 4th PCST Conference, held in Melbourne in 1996.

The search is over! One arrived in the mail today!

Keynote speakers included

  * Leigh Dayton, science journalist, speaking on the escape of the Calicivirus
  * Ian Lowe, a former President of ASC, Eureka winner, OA, Centenary medallist etc: "Building the Global Century - a Particapatory model"
  * Bruce Lewenstein, Cornell Uni USA,: "Conflicts and Pressures in PCST"
  * Peter Cullen, Wentworth Group, ex-President of FASTS, AO etc etc: "Communicate, Publish or Perish!"
  *   Ian Plimer (!): after-dinner speaker
  * Donald McDonald, Chair of ABC: "Technology and the Future of the Public Broadcaster"
  * Peter Doherty (2 weeks after his Nobel Prize was announced)
  * Malcolm McIntosh, CEO CSIRO: closing address.
  *   Robyn Williams (Science Show)

Speakers in the parallel sessions included:

  *   Karina Kelly (ABC)
  * Wendy Parsons (towering figure in communication in CSIRO)
  * Richard Eckersley (CSIRO, writer, AM, founding director of Australia21 Ltd<http://www.australia21.org.au/>)
  * Alison Leigh (then EP Quantum)
  * Sue Stocklmayer (ANU, training science communicators)
  *   Leonie Rennie (UWA)
  *   Michelle Riedlinger (Econnect)
  *   Elizabeth Elenius (CSIRO)
  *   Peter Pockley (writer extraordinaire)
  *   Chris Bryant (ANU)
  * Michael Gore (Founding Director Questacon)
  *   Renao Schibeci (UWA)
  * Lina Melero Nichele (CSIRO Plant Industry)
  * Jenni Metcalfe (ex-CSIRO, just started Econnect)
  * Ian Anderson (President ASC, New Scientist editor)
  * Simon Torok (CSIRO Environmental Mechanics)
And another 250 delegates, including about 50 internationals.

Wendy Parsons chaired the Local Scientific Committee and Geoffrey Taylor of UniMelb chaired the Local Organising Committee

It was a big event for Australia, coming just 2 years after the founding of ASC. It was a real opportunity for science communicators in Australia to come together at at own event, and the networking was fierce.

(Thanks to Mike Pickford of Australian Science Network for the program. Mike's company managed the conference.)
