Keynote speaker:
Don't miss your chance to hear Dr Rodney Syme, an advocate of physician-assisted death for patients whose suffering is intolerable. Dr Syme, a urologist, has been involved with Dying with Dignity in Victoria for 20 years. His book, A Good Death, in which he describes palliating suffering through the provision of advice and medication, was published in 2008. Last year Dr Syme was interviewed by police over the death of a former journalist to whom he supplied Nembutal.

Friday 28 August
Session 1: Death – law, ethics & public opinion
Session 2: Dilemmas in medical publishing today
Saturday 29 August
Session 3: Pitching to the public – community engagement, social media & more
Session 4: Pathways to medical writing – personal stories
Friday 28 August
Workshop A: How using evidence can open a new world of great stories.
Want to avoid being misled by friendly marketing folk? Interested in informing your readers as accurately and comprehensively as possible? This workshop will introduce some of the basic principles of the evidence-informed approach to medicine in an engaging and accessible way with two internationally respected educators.

Workshop B: The Digital Age: online writing.
This workshop looks at the way text for websites, e-newsletters and other forms of digital
communications are constructed and how to capture your core message and optimise content for digital mediums. In this session you will learn key strategies, tips and techniques for effective and efficient online written communication.

Saturday 29 August
Workshop C: Earning a crust: how to be a successful freelance writer.
Whether you’re a full-time writer or a part-timer supplementing a regular income, you still need to set up the basics–good invoicing, a dedicated home office space, time management, a process of pitching stories, figuring out what to charge and broadening your sources of income. This workshop will equip you with the tools to build and maintain a successful business as a freelance writer.

Workshop D: Stop writing like a scientist!
This workshop is about writing for readers outside your original field of health or research. Participants will learn to invert the ‘boring-stuff-first’ sciencewriting pyramid, while still managing to slash the word count. Befriend the delete key, flog ‘track changes’ until your sentences are a sea of blood-red ink, then delete some more.
Social Program:
Welcome Reception: Join the conference committee for pre-conference drinks and networking from 6-8pm on Thursday, 27 August. Tickets are included in the price of a full conference registration. Additional tickets can be purchased for $30 for other guests. Venue to be advised.

Annual Conference Dinner: Our venue is The Ship Inn Function Room, South Bank, Corner of Stanley & Sidon Streets, South Bank Parklands. Established in 1864, and once a rowdy sailor’s drinking den, the venue has now been transformed into a Gastro Pub with views over the Parklands. Tickets are $70 for a three-course meal including limited drinks, with a cash bar available. GUEST SPEAKER: Emeritus Professor Roly Sussex
