Dear ASC members,
I am passing on the sad news that Graeme O'Neill, a passionate and committed advocate for Australian science and Australian science writing, has died aged 68.
Graeme began his award-winning journalism career as a cadet at the Sunraysia Daily in 1965, and went on to work as a science writer and columnist with The Age, Time Magazine and the Sunday Herald-Sun following a stint with CSIRO.
Over his career Graeme twice won the Michael Daley Award for best science feature (print media) - in 1988 and 1993; the Eureka Prize for Environmental Journalism (1994); and the Amgen Award for Biotechnology Journalism (1994).
You can read a short biography on Graeme here: http://www.newsmodo.com/our-journalists/2014/12/18/graeme-oneill
Graeme suffered a heart attack late Sunday night.
He is survived by his wife Elaine, children Chris, Keiran, Shane and Lisa, and grandchildren.
A funeral service for Graeme will be held on 29 December at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in the town of Culgoa, north-west Victoria. Anyone wanting to send condolences to Graeme's family can contact his son-in-law Toby, who is copied on this email.
