Dear ASC members,
You may be interested in a book that has recently been published, and if you are in the ACT then perhaps attending the official launch on the 11th of March.
Recent CPAS graduate, Chris Yardley, has reworked his thesis into a book : "The representation of science and scientists on postage stamps".
Professor Mike Gore, AO, will launch the book at 6.00pm on March 11 at the Southern Cross Club, Jamison.
Australian Science Communicators (and philatelists) in the ACT are invited to attend.
One peer-reviewer commented :
The book represents a significant contribution to the semiotics of science communication, based on an obvious yet rarely studied resource. Yardley develops such themes well. His selection of illustrations is well balanced and insightful. It is intriguing to see how the way in which Australia has represented explorers and exploration over time evolves towards more complex, yet more appealing, imagery. One has seen many of the stamps, but the juxtaposition of stamps issued decades apart has an unexpected immediacy.
The book can be read with interest by a broad spectrum of readers. Philatelists will relish the broad range of stamp issues brought together in one publication and will undoubtedly learn more about science. Science communicators will find an interesting development on styles of representation of complex ideas in images designed to be seen fleetingly - skills that now need to transferred to rather different environments.
An RSVP is not required.
Please feel free to forward this invitation to other science communicators and/or stamp enthusiasts.
