Another star for us to look out for in the velvet night sky.

Condolences to her family.

Subject: [ASC-list] Vale Melanie McKenzie

Dear ASC Colleagues,
The Science Communication Community in Australia has lost a young and vital colleague today in the passing of Melanie McKenzie. She was passionate about science communication, about research in science communication, about evaluating what we do, about getting it right. She was active in the ASC both nationally in the Science Communication Research and Educators Network (SCREN) and in the Queensland branch of the ASC. Her PhD, which I was privileged to supervise, looked at the values that inform evaluation in science communication. She interviewed many evaluators, both here in Australia and overseas, to give a powerful picture of the state of evaluation—and how to make evaluation in science communication happen and be better. She recently went to UWA to take up a lectureship in science communication in one of Australia’s leading programs. Her death leaves a hole in our community.

The University of Queensland, School of Communication and Arts, has established the Melanie McKenzie Postgraduate Teaching Award in her honour as she was a gifted teacher and an extraordinarily engaged colleague in her time at UQ.

She is survived by her partner who was clear in his instructions
She was happy, authentic, fiercely intelligent, and loved her friends, food, wine, and words... Mel made the most of the short time she had, and lived well—so please don’t be sad.
While many of us will still feel enormous sadness, we should use Melanie as an example of the best way to live and channel our energies into passion for science communication and ‘getting it right’.

Sincerely,
Joan
