[ASC-list] Are you a science journalist / writer?

Hi Brendan,

Thanks for the interest!

I'm sticking with LinkedIn for now mainly because the profiles on LinkedIn
are real people with work-related info and also because we've been getting
good feedback from international sci commers who like to use LinkedIn
groups and appreciate seeing sci comm groups on that channel.

However, that's just a starting point.

If we end up with a science writing / journalism brains trust I'm sure a
special interest group could morph into other realms and channels as the
key players see fit.

Regarding the LinkedIn password breach:

I can highly recommend registering your email addresses with this site:
https://haveibeenpwned.com/

In exchange for your registration, if you have been compromised, you will
receive emails with tantalising subject headers such as:

"You're one of 68,648,009 people pwned in the Dropbox data breach"

The body of the email then outlines what has happened with useful
accompanying info such as:

You've been pwned!

You signed up for notifications when your account was pwned in a data
breach and unfortunately, it's happened. Here's what's known about the
breach: [details of breach]

*Why are you only hearing about this now?* Whilst the breach occurred in
July 2012, sometimes there can be a lengthy lead time of months or even
years before the data is disclosed publicly. "Have I been pwned?" will
always attempt to alert you ASAP, it's just a question of how readily
available the data is.

As with any data breach, the usual advice applies: go to the impacted site
and reset your password immediately plus, of course, ensure that you're not
reusing that password on any other sites.
Breaches you were pwned in

A "breach" is an incident where a site's data has been illegally accessed
by hackers and then released publicly. Review the types of data that were
compromised (email addresses, passwords, credit cards etc.) and take
appropriate action, such as changing passwords.
------------------------------

Adobe: In October 2013, 153 million Adobe accounts were breached with each
containing an internal ID, username, email, *encrypted* password and a
password hint in plain text. The password cryptography was poorly done and many
were quickly resolved back to plain text
<http://stricture-group.com/files/adobe-top100.txt>. The unencrypted hints
also disclosed much about the passwords
<http://www.troyhunt.com/2013/11/adobe-credentials-and-serious.html> adding
further to the risk that hundreds of millions of Adobe customers already
faced.

*Compromised data:* Email addresses, Password hints, Passwords, Usernames

Dropbox: In mid-2012, Dropbox suffered a data breach which exposed the
stored credentials of tens of millions of their customers. In August 2016, they
forced password resets for customers they believed may be at risk
<https://motherboard.vice.com/read/dropbox-forces-password-resets-after-user-credentials-exposed>.
A large volume of data totalling over 68 million records was subsequently
traded online
<https://motherboard.vice.com/read/hackers-stole-over-60-million-dropbox-accounts>
and included email addresses and salted hashes of passwords (half of them
SHA1, half of them bcrypt).

*Compromised data:* Email addresses, Passwords

LinkedIn: In May 2016, LinkedIn had 164 million email addresses and
passwords exposed
<https://www.troyhunt.com/observations-and-thoughts-on-the-linkedin-data-breach>.
Originally hacked in 2012, the data remained out of sight until being
offered for sale on a dark market site 4 years later. The passwords in the
breach were stored as SHA1 hashes without salt, the vast majority of which
were quickly cracked in the days following the release of the data.

*Compromised data:* Email addresses, Passwords

tumblr: In early 2013, tumblr suffered a data breach
<https://staff.tumblr.com/post/144263069415/we-recently-learned-that-a-third-party-had>
which resulted in the exposure of over 65 million accounts. The data was
later put up for sale on a dark market website and included email addresses
and passwords stored as salted SHA1 hashes.

Handy!

Cheers,

Kali
