Dear ASC-List,

Today's member guest Dr Janet Salisbury is the founder and a director of
Biotext Pty Ltd. Biotext* offers literature research, writing, editing,
data visualisation, graphic design, web development and publication
management services.

After a number of postdoctoral years working in cancer research, Janet made
a career change to science writing and editing in 1990 — initially as a
sole trader ('trading as' Biotext from 1997), then as sole director of
Biotext Pty Ltd from 1999 to 2014 and finally as one of 4 directors of the
much expanded company.

She has researched, written and edited proceedings, guidelines and reports
for numerous government departments and agencies, nongovernment
organisations and academic institutions. Many jobs have involved
high-profile publications of national significance.

Janet has a particular interest in the organisation and presentation of
complex information to aid understanding, encourage engagement and
compliance, and provide new insights (information design).

Along the way, she has been lucky enough to work with Australia’s top
experts in evidence-based medicine and has interpreted the findings of
literature reviews for the development of clinical practice and population
health guidelines, and assessment of new health technologies.

In 2002, Janet was one of the first people in the world to advocate the
application of evidence-based medicine methods to environmental management.
Since 1999, Biotext, has grown from two staff in a Canberra back garden to
thirteen staff located in commercial office space in Canberra with
subsidiary offices in Melbourne and Sydney, and a network of collaborators
and contractors all over the country and beyond.

In October 2016, Janet retired from day-today work while remaining a member
of the board of directors.
