*The Science of Science Communication: Relevance and Main Findings*

*Professor Mike S. Schäfer*

*Thursday 25 July 11am, Fritz Loewe Theatre, School of Earth Sciences
(Corner of Swanston and Elgin Sts), University of Melbourne*

Science communication is central to modern knowledge societies – and has
become even more important in the (alleged) age of “post-truth” and
“alternative facts”. Science communication efforts have mushroomed, and
correspondingly, social scientists have started to analyze the science
communication ecosystem. The talk explores the relevance of this “science
of science communication”, outlines crucial findings and discusses their
implications.

Dr. Mike S. Schäfer is Professor of Science Communication with the
University of Zurich’s Department of Communications and Media Research. He
is also Director of the University’s Center for Higher Education and
Science Studies (CHESS) and of the AGORA commission at the Swiss National
Science Foundation. His research focuses on science communication, online
communication and public sphere theory, issues on which he has published
widely.
