Hi, I did not find the actual SCOPE article, but here was the first article we submitted, which I imagine was printed exactly as we sent it! 😊

But has nobody surveyed ASC since 2006???

Looking at these articles again reminded me of how much I relied on Melanie McKenzie as I tried to run a consultancy business and be ASC president while hosting the World Conference of Science Journalists. Vale Mel, almost 4 years since your untimely death. I greatly miss your energy, intellect and integrity.

Kia ora Lisa,

It might be interesting to compare results of the 2019 ANU survey with one conducted by Jenni Metcalfe, Melanie McKenzie and myself on behalf of ASC in 2006. We reported results of that survey in a series of three articles for ASC newsletters in 2006- 2007.

I’ve found the second and third articles of the series that contained results from that survey. I don’t seem to have a copy of the first one and it doesn’t look like the old SCOPEs are archived on the ASC website. Someone else may have a copy of that first survey overview.

These two articles provide interesting historical snapshots.

Kind regards, Nancy

2019 Australian science communicators remuneration and skills survey

As a science communicator do you ever wish you could find out how much your skills are worth on the job market?

We do, which is why we have teamed up with ANU’s Centre for the Public Awareness of Science<https://apc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcpas.anu.edu.au%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cnancy.longnecker%40otago.ac.nz%7Cb49f385b722244684e3b08d737e8226f%7C0225efc578fe4928b1579ef24809e9ba%7C1%7C0%7C637039342525613137&sdata=ipTfcfzpPocC6EW0GbJFb3Dlw%2F2l8HxFDGp8T8iPxak%3D&reserved=0> to develop Australia’s first profile of Australia’s science communicators.

We’re looking to hear from anyone who plays a role in science communication, including people who communicate about science as part of their role, including scientists, academics and volunteers.

By answering the questions in this five to ten-minute survey you’ll help you and others benchmark the salaries that different kinds of science communicators get for the different skills and services they provide.

We’ll release a report of the results from this survey at our annual conference in February<https://apc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fasc2020.asc.asn.au%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cnancy.longnecker%40otago.ac.nz%7Cb49f385b722244684e3b08d737e8226f%7C0225efc578fe4928b1579ef24809e9ba%7C1%7C0%7C637039342525613137&sdata=bLKP4X0HbRaYF9XPXnSwzBJLPYkECX%2Fwi%2FeI%2Bmkn8s8%3D&reserved=0> and hope to publish relevant findings in an academic journal.

The survey will be open until 5pm, Monday 23 September.

Once you’ve finished please consider sharing this survey with any friends or relatives you may have who also communicate about science so we hear from all kinds of science communicators.

President, Australian Science Communicators
