*Science Communication Careers Event*
Date: Thursday October 21
Time 5.30 - 6.30pm AEDT

Want to build your career in science communication?
Then the science communication careers event is for you.

On October 21, the Australian Science Communicators ACT branch will deliver
their annual careers showcase event with a panel discussion to highlight a
range of career opportunities. Breakout networking rooms will follow to
give you the chance to speak directly to professionals in the field and
have your questions answered.

Join us from your home, workplace or couch and discover where a career in
science communication can take you.

This event is being held online via Zoom. Registration
required and open to all prospective scicomm job seekers in Australia.

Toss Gasscoigne will be moderating our panel consisting of:

*Isla Nakano*

*Science communicator & digital content producer*

Isla is a science communicator with experience working in a range of
settings, from media to education. She has hosted various nationally
broadcast shows on Network Ten, including kids' science show, Scope, and
long-running wildlife and lifestyle show, Totally Wild. Isla has also
worked at Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre and at the
Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, presenting shows and workshops
to school students across the country, as well as developing resources for
teachers and educators in Australia and abroad.

*Cassandra Diamond*

*Executive Manager of Business and Operations for CSIRO Education and

Cassandra is a Torres Strait Islander woman who grew up on the Darling
Downs in Queensland.  She is the oldest of four children and lives in
Ipswich with her husband and cat.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Justice
Administration and a Bachelor of Education (Honours).

Cassandra’s background includes youth work, rural community development,
Indigenous engagement, youth justice and child protection as well as
education.  Cassandra has been working in STEM education since 2017 and in
that time, she established the Young Indigenous Women’s STEM Academy, and
worked across a range of education program to embed Indigenous perspectives
in STEM.

In her spare time Cassandra enjoys watching Zombie movies, cross-stitching
and reading horror novels.

*Simon Torok*

*Scientell - Director*

Dr Simon Torok (he/him) is Director of Scientell (www.scientell.com.au). He
has worked in communication for more than 25 years, for CSIRO in Canberra
and Melbourne, for the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research in
England, and as editor of CSIRO's magazines *The Helix* and *Scientriffic*.
Simon completed a GradDip in Science Communication at ANU and has a PhD in
climate change from the University of Melbourne. He has written over 150
articles for newspapers, magazines, trade journals and blogs, and published
dozens of scientific papers on climate and communication. He has
co-authored 20 popular books, several of which have been translated into
Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean and Hungarian.
